Dave's Annual HOT Ride and COOL Pool Party | |
---|---|
Saturday
Aug. 1 | Join the DOGS on this Lughnasadh celebration (look it up) ride as we travel through some of the most strikingly scenic and lightly traveled roads of Hunterdon County, just touching on parts of Somerset County. We have 3 ride options, all of them starting off together; then splitting into 20, 32, and 41 mile routes at the general store in the village of Oldwick. The longer route will head south, crossing Route 22 and passes Solberg Airport, while the short route continues back to Califon. The featured 32 mile route captures all of the scenic beauty of the longer ride without the flatter extension south of Route 22. All routes will return on riparian Rockaway Road to Mountainville, then continue to ascend alongside the Rockaway Creek to the top of CR-512, ending in a speedy descent down into Califon and back to the ride start. These rides all have several steep climbs. Bring your granny gear and be ready to jump in the cool pool at the finish. |
Time | Bagels and coffee at 8:45. Ride starts at 9:30 AM. |
Location | Dave's house, 31 School St., Califon, NJ |
Distance | 32 miles, with shorter (20 miles) and longer (41 miles) options |
Terrain | Hilly to rolling with flatter added terrain on the long ride. |

MATES Rally (non-DOGS) | |
---|---|
Friday
Aug. 7 to Sunday Aug. 9 | Join us again in historic Carlisle in the beautiful Cumberland Valley
of central Pennsylvania. Register early, as space is limited. Cost is
$450. per tandem team.
We'll stay at Dickinson College, a lovely small liberal arts school founded in 1783. We will be housed again in the Goodyear Dorm. Those of you who did MATES in 2003 will remember the loft-style apartments in this former shoe factory. Located adjacent to Carlisle's Public Square, the College and the nearby area offer interesting architecture, restaurants, and antique shops. Just outside of town, the roads change from town streets with colonial homes to the beautiful tandem- friendly rolling country roads of the Cumberland Valley, many of which follow the area's shady rivers including the Yellow Breeches. The nearby Allenberry Resort, site of our Saturday lunch, is built on the banks of this famous trout stream. You'll enjoy scenic rides past historic stone houses and barns surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery. |

DOGS Visit with the Vet | |
---|---|
Sunday
Aug. 23 | It's about time you DOGS got a check up anyway. Please bring proof of current rabies and kennel cough vaccination (just kidding). We will head toward Bergen County (it is a Jersey club after all) and meander through Rivervale, Harrington Park, Northvale and then back into NY for a tour of the Piermont Marsh. We'll ride out for a spectacular view of the T-Z bridge and Palisades from the end of the Piermont Pier (point of embarkation for New York Troops heading to Europe in World War II) where we'll re-group and enjoy the view. From there on to Nyack to make the bike scene at the Runcible Spoon Bakery. After some serious carbohydrate replacement we will head back to New City over Hook Mountain . There are some climbs in the beginning and end of the route. The last 7 miles are challenging but nothing awful. |
