This ride was the rain date for the ride originally scheduled for Aug 9 and, again, the day started out cloudy and rainy, but we were determined to ride today!! We met at the County Animal Hospital where Bob works as a vet. Spedley, the 3-legged cat, greeted us at the front desk and purred while we signed in.
Although it was sligthly sprinkling, we set out with great expectations. The roads were nice, tree-lined rolling hills without too much traffic. The route led us out to the pier with promises of nice views of the Tappan Zee Bridge. Unexpectedly, we encountered a very large puddle of water across the road as a result of Hurricane Bill offshore making waves. Rather than miss the nice ride out to the pier, we all took off our shoes, hefted our bikes up on our shoulders and walked through the puddle.
It turned out to be well worth the effort. The views were great and we returned through a beautiful walkway along the water's edge. The next stop was the Runcible Bakery where we all enjoyed some excellent sandwiches and other treats. There were tons of other cyclists out and the bakery was clearly a popular stopping point. The last 7 miles back were the hilliest part of the ride, but also contained some awesome downhills to go with the uphills.
Everyone pretty much started, rode and finished together and agreed it was a great day to ride. Afterwards our hosts treated us to some snacks and drinks along with a tour of the vet hospital where we got to meet the dogs and cats currently in residence. Thanks to our newest DOGS members for hosting a fun day!
