Attending the 2010 Pumpkin Patch Pedal were 11 intrepid DOGS teams (that we saw or heard about) at Thompson Park, Jamesburg, NJ: Larry and Brenda Isherwood, Mark Cook and Cheryl Prudhomme, Bob and Helen Bird, Richard and Michelle Dittmar, Mark Shannon and Debbie Montreuil, Neil McPhee and Barbara Flint, Al and Deb Cudworth, Jeff Winich and Wendy Samuelson, Ron and Barbara Anderson, Mike and Caren Bianco and Ed and Pat Gifford. I hope I didn't miss anyone! The teams all started at various times on different rides of 50, 62 and 100 miles.
Conditions were cool temperatures with a breezy tailwind at the start (which can mean only one thing...). A spirited pace was held until the first rest stop by the group riding the 62 mile route. Then a truce was agreed upon for a slower pace for the remainder of the ride. The 62 mile route was similar to past years, going through roads with little traffic and rolling countryside. Very tandem friendly.
After finishing generous amounts of pumpkin and apple pie at the last rest stop we turned into the strong headwind and headed back towards Thompson Park. Sharing the work made the return ride not so strenuous but by the last 4 to 5 miles the DOGS teams were ready for the post-ride feast and the finish line! Most teams hung around for the festivities that were shortened by blustery winds and coolish temperatures coming off the lake.
It was good to see everyone and finally meet new DOGS members, Mark and Debbie. They completed their first metric century on a tandem and it was Debbie's longest ride on the back of a tandem. Congrats Debbie and Mark!
