Eight teams showed up at Califon Island Park on Sunday for the February version of the monthly winter Pancake ride; seven people also met at the Califon Firehouse for a pre-ride carbo-load. Although there was a heavy frost overnight, by 11 AM most of the ice on the roads had melted and there were just a few small patches that the group carefully avoided. Team Cate broke off from the main group and rode the beautiful Columbia Rail Trail to High Bridge where they enjoyed a warm-up coffee and crumb cake before their return trip to Califon. The rest of the group rode the traditional Pancake Ride route which seemed hillier than the route we took last month, even though we traveled on basically the same roads--just the opposite way. After 24 miles under sunny skies with temps in the 40s, the group met back at the Park and proceeded to Nicola's Pizza for a post-ride recharge and pre-game food and gab fest.
To all you teams that couldn't make the ride (and you know who you are), consider coming out in March for the next Pancake Ride. With the sun getting stronger and the days getting longer, staying warm on the bike is not a problem (especially after the initial climb out the river valley on Frog Hollow Road).
