Califon Pancake Ride

Sunday was a beautiful day, especially for a tandem bike ride! Four teams indulged in pancakes, etc. at the Califon firehouse before the ride and were well prepared to mount an assault on the Hunterdon hills. As the seven teams gathered at Califon Island Park, the hardest decision to be made was whether or not to wear those arm and leg warmers that felt so good earlier in the day. Most teams opted to keep them on, although at 10:30 the temperature was close to 60 degrees.

After a long climb up Frog Hollow Rd., no one was chilly anymore! At the mid-ride stop at the Hacklebarney Cider Mill we all became honorary Cider Dogs, after which we continued towards the most formidable climb of the day on Beacon Hill Rd. The best part of that climb was going down the other side, most notably by Team DblOccupancy (Walt and Claire) who came within a whisker of breaking the speed limit (on I-287, that is!): 54.43 mph. Team JETStream (Mark and Cheryl), not to be outdone, pedaled furiously down that same hill and went 119.1 mph.

The ride ended back at the park and five teams stayed afterwards for pizza and soda at Casola's in Califon. Walt went home to ride his horsey tricycle.

Another pancake ride is scheduled for Dec. 5.
